  2. "EARTHWATCH is a graphic program that presents in real-time a moving Mercator"

  16. "To achieve an accurate real-time rendering, the EARTHWATCH program must"
  17. "have six parameters properly set.  They are DATE, TIME, LATITUDE, LONGITUDE,"
  18. "STD/DST, and TIME ZONE, and are explained on the subsequent HELP screens."

  20. "DATE:   This date setting is used to calculate the astronomical phenomena used"
  21. "        by the program.  It is the date kept by the PC's Disk Operating System"
  22. "        (DOS).  You can change it to any other date within the DOS limits"
  23. "        (years 1980 through 2099), but remember to change it back when you"
  24. "        are exiting the program.  You will be prompted to do so automatically"
  25. "        by EARTHWATCH if DATE has been changed."

  29. "TIME:   This time setting must be the correct clock time (whether local standard"
  30. "        or local daylight savings time) for the location chosen - most commonly"
  31. "        your own city, designated by the LATITUDE and LONGITUDE settings."
  32. "        As in the case of DATE, this is the time kept by the PC's DOS, and it"
  33. "        should be restored to the correct time when you exit the program."
  34. "        EARTHWATCH will automatically prompt you accordingly if TIME has been"
  35. "        changed."

  38. "LATITUDE:  The geographical latitude (in degrees and minutes of arc) that"
  39. "           EARTHWATCH will use to calculate sunrise/sunset times for the"
  40. "           location chosen.  North of the equator is positive, south negative."
  41. "           An option is presented to display a gazetteer listing about 400"
  42. "           cities around the world, along with their co-ordinates (lat/long)"
  43. "           If your city isn't listed and you are not concerned with optimum"
  44. "           accuracy in the EARTHWATCH display, use the co-ordinates of a"
  45. "           listed city nearest you.  Otherwise you can determine your co-"
  46. "           ordinates from a map, or a more complete gazetteer such as those"
  47. "           found in most world atlases."

  49. "LONGITUDE: The geographical longitude, also in degrees and minutes, and also"
  50. "           used by EARTHWATCH in calculating local sunrise/sunset and in"
  51. "           positioning the map.  Longitude at the Prime Meridian (through"
  52. "           Greenwich, England) is zero.  West of this meridian is positive"
  53. "           longitude up to 180 degrees, and east is negative to -180 degrees."

  56. "STD/DST:   This setting depends upon whether the TIME setting refers to Standard"
  57. "           or Daylight Savings Time.  Since Daylight Savings Time regions vary"
  58. "           with political boundries, seasons, and local legislation, EARTHWATCH"
  59. "           makes no attempt to predict or show them on the world display.  All"
  60. "           Time Zone hours around the world are displayed across the top and"
  61. "           and indicate the present local Standard Hour for that zone.  They"
  62. "           are updated every hour on the hour.  If Daylight Savings Time applies"
  63. "           to a particular region, the user must add one hour for the correct"
  64. "           clock time there."

  73. "TIME ZONE: Used by EARTHWATCH in conjunction with the local time to determine"
  74. "           Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), necessary to position the map correctly."
  75. "           The 24 Time Zones around the world have somewhat irregular shapes"
  76. "           and are shown by dashed lines on the map."

  78. "           Whenever a LATITUDE or LONGITUDE setting is changed, EARTHWATCH"
  79. "           automatically runs a routine that graphically determines the TIME"
  80. "           ZONE for the new setting.  However, this result could be off by one"
  81. "           if the new location lies near a zone border.  If you wish to check"
  82. "           the TIME ZONE value for your location, you should consult a world"
  83. "           atlas containing a World Time Zone map.  You can then manually enter"
  84. "           your TIME ZONE number by selecting the TIME ZONE option from the"
  85. "           CHANGE MENU."

  87. "           The scale used by EARTHWATCH for TIME ZONE is a value of zero for"
  88. "           the zone occupied by Greenwich, England, and increasing as the zones"
  89. "           proceed westward around the world up to a value of 23.  Thus, for"
  90. "           example, New York is in TIME ZONE 5, Melbourne in 14, and Rome in 23."

  96. "an option (I) available on the CHANGE MENU that invokes the HIGHLIGHTED"
  97. "LOCATIONS MENU.  This menu displays a set of from one to ten Latitudes &"
  98. "Longitudes of locations that have been pre-selected to be highlighted as white"
  99. "dots on the EARTHWATCH display.  Along with each Lat/Long pair is space for a"
